achtQuark at the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum 2017!

Members of the achtQuark team found new inspiration while attending the 10th Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum (GMF) in Bonn, Germany, from the 19th to the 21st of June 2017, and came home with a wealth of new fangled multimedia tips to integrate into current and future projects.

Deutsche Welle selects a particular area of focus for its flagship event this year, and this year’s focus was “Identity and Diversity.” Among the many topics covered in the three days and nights of the conference were artificial intelligence and journalism, populism – a threat to values and Fake News, as well as digital formats in journalism.

This year’s 2000 GMF 2000 participants from 130 countries attended 40 individual events. Needless to say, our team’s attendees were still reeling from overstimulation upon their return to Munich, though they do promise to make good use of the many new ideas in very short order:

Our highlights:

Yusuf Omar – Senior Social Reporter CNN London

Yusuf Omar, who calls himself a “Mojo” (Mobile Journalist), and his wife Sumaiya Omar showed us the best ways to report live with only your smartphone, how to edit videos on your smartphone and gave an introduction to the best apps to do this, as well as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat features.

Conflict: Handling Trauma in Frontline Journalism

In this session, young conflict photographers Capucine Granier-Deferre and Patrick Tombola spoke about their experiences in conflict areas and how they process their work emotionally. The director and trauma expert of the DART Centre Europe was part of the discussion as well and offered further advice and insights. Subsequently, the impressive exhibition “Conflict” from Epicentro Art, that includes pictures from the attending photographers, was opened.

Freedom of Speech Award:

This year’s Freedom of Speech Award was awarded to the White House Correspondence Association (WHCA). WHCA-Director Jeff Mason accepted the award in person and gave a detailed report of the difficulties that WHCA reporters face under the current administration. The ceremony took place for the third time. Last year, Sedat Ergin, Editor in Chief of the Turkish daily paper “Hürriyet”, received the award and in 2015 it was awarded to the imprisoned Saudi Blogger Raif Badawi.

Key Note Speech by Dr. Andreas Görgen

In his Key Note Speech the director of the German Foreign Office’s Department for Culture and Communication highlighted that Germany’s success in the world depends on its global openness and that the collaboration of civil society organizations, next to national collaboration, plays an important part as well.
